Crappie are considered by many to be one of the best tasting fresh water fish. Because of this, they are a highly sought after game fish even though they typically only weigh a 1/2 to 1 pound. Crappie feed on smaller bait fish, aquatic insects, or small crawdads. Crappie spawn in the shallow waters in the spring when the water temperature begins to rise above 55 degrees. During this time the males will turn very dark and be very aggressive striking anything the presents itself as a threat. The female will lay more than 150,000 eggs which the male will guard until they hatch. After the eggs hatch and summer approaches crappie will move from the shallow areas into deeper water.
