The Yellow Perch is yellow in color with several dark vertical bars. There are two dorsal fins, the first one spiny and the second soft. Perch can grow to be over a foot long and can weigh several pounds, but they are usually much smaller than this. They prefer to live in schools and in habitat with lots of vegetation. Perch eat plankton when they are young, but move up to aquatic insects as they get older. They remain in deeper water when they are not feeding but come into the shallows in search of food typically at dawn and dusk.
