Description for the Deschutes River Lower RegionThis section covers the river from its mouth at the Columbia to Maupin.
The Deschutes River in Central Oregon draws fly fishermen from around the world for its "Redsides" Rainbow Trout. The Rainbow Trout in the river have a red band on their sides distinctively darker than the average rainbow and are often referred to as "Redsides" or "Redbands". The peak Rainbow season is from April through September. During the last part of May through the first part of June anglers flock to take advantage of the Stonefly hatches. The river also has a strong Steelhead run from July through October and a Spring Chinook run around April through June. Because of BLM boating access restrictions and areas of the river's bank owned by local tribes, be sure to consult the regulations before planning a trip.
